Where should I park to drop off and pick up my sailor from Tuck's Point?

Please park in the parking lot during drop-off and pick-up. Stopping on Tucks Point Road creates a dangerous situation for sailors, parents, and those with whom we share this space as they cross the road. Please do not stop in the roadway to load/unload your vehicle. MSA’s instructors will be available to receive sailors five minutes before classes begin, and staff will ensure all sailors remain supervised until they are picked up from class.

We ask that you drop off and pick up your sailors as close as possible to the designated start and end times, as early and late arrivals may disrupt the other classes and limit our instructors’ ability to take a break between classes. The drop-off window for each class begins 5 minutes before it is scheduled to start and ends 10 minutes after; the pick-up window begins 5 minutes before it is scheduled to stop and ends 5 minutes after. If you plan to drop off or pick up your sailor outside of their class’s windows shown above, please inform the Program Director, Head Instructor, and/or the instructor(s) assigned to teach your sailor’s class as far in advance as possible.

MSA's 2026 Traffic Control Policy, which includes a map of Tuck's Point showing appropriate parking areas, is available here.

What should my sailor bring to MSA each day?

Sailors should come to class prepared for a safe and fun day on the water. This means wearing adequate clothing and safe shoes, plus staying hydrated. Sailors should also come to sailing class with sun-protection: sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Our coaches and instructors recommend polarized sunglasses, as they offer better sun-protection and allow sailors to see clearly, even when sunlight is reflecting off the water.

Mandatory Items

  • USCG-approved PFD (life jacket)

  • Proper sailing attire that will be comfortable when wet

  • Closed-toe footwear

  • Sun-protection

  • Water bottle

Recommended Items

  • Change of clothes

  • Towel

  • Snack for after class

Sailors should wear non-cotton, synthetic clothes that will be comfortable when wet. Swim bottoms or athletic shorts are both acceptable.

What kind of shoes are appropriate for sailing?

Given the safety risks involved in sailing and being around the water, sailors must wear appropriate shoes for the entirety of their time at MSA. Sailors without appropriate shoes will be sent home.

Sailors are required to attend class in slip-resistant, closed-toed shoes, appropriate for use on a boat and in the water. Neither flip-flops nor slides are acceptable. Our instructors recommend Native Jefferson shoes, Keens, generic water shoes, or sailing boots. Sailing boots can be purchased online at specialty sailing stores such as Zhik, Rooster, Gill, Zim Sailing, and West Marine. If your sailor plans to attend multiple sessions of sailing, we highly recommend investing in a pair of high-quality sailing boots.

Do sailors need to wear life jackets? What kind of PFD should they bring to MSA?

Sailors are required to bring a properly-fitting, USCG-approved life jacket/personal flotation device (PFD) that is 100% dependent on foam for floatation. USCG-approved Type III and sailing-designated Type V PFDs are acceptable. All life jackets will be fit tested on the first day of class. All sailors are required to wear their PFDs properly zipped, buckled, and tightened whenever on or near the water, including when on floating docks, in a boat, swimming, and whenever else directed to by MSA staff.

In the interest of safety, MSA has a zero-tolerance policy regarding our PFD rules; sailors who fail to abide by these rules will face disciplinary action.

Are JSP classes held during foul weather?

Our Summer JSP classes are held rain or shine! We will sail in the rain if the wind is not too strong and there is no lightnign risk, so students must bring rain gear and be prepared to sail. Appropriate on-shore activities will be conducted indoors at the Manchester Yacht Club if conditions are too severe for sailing.

Does my sailor need to own a personal boat to participate in the JSP?

Nope! Tuition for all Junior Sailing Program classes (including Green Fleet Teams) includes use of an MSA boat for the duration of the session.

Race Team participants may choose to use a privately owned boat (please contact the Program Director to arrange a berth for the season) or charter an MSA boat. A limited number of Race Team charter boats are available, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible!

Our plans have changed, and my sailor can no longer attend the class they are enrolled in. What are our options?

If you're no longer planning to attend MSA, please contact the registrar as soon as possible. We may be able to transfer your registration to a different time/session if space is available. All tuition is non-refundable, but we may be able to issue a credit to your Active account to be used on future registrations under certain circumstances.

What should I do if my sailor is unable to attend class?

If your sailor will be absent from MSA, please inform the Program Director, Head Instructor, or instructors assigned to your sailor's class.

Can my sailor work as a CIT or Junior Instructor?

MSA employs several Junior Instructors each summer. These positions are generally filled during the winter and spring. These sailors assist the senior staff with teaching classes. Junior Instructors are high school-age sailors, highly recommended by their instructors, and chosen by merit. All JSP staff, including Junior Instructors, must meet the age, certification, and qualification minimums set by 105 CMR 430: Minimum Standards for Recreational Camps for Children.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the Program Director as far in advance of the summer as possible for more information about the requirements for working as a Junior Instructor.
