Program Director

Doug Walker (Program Director) Is beginning his third year as program director and oversees the daily sailing programs and manages the instructors. Our Senior Instructors typically have had prior coaching experience, some collegiate sailing experience, and have Level I US Sailing Certification or higher. In addition to our senior instructors, the program also has a number of Junior Instructors who assist Senior Instructors and fill in where applicable.

Rob Brown
Race Team Coach

Kyle Davis
Race Team Coach
Kyle Davis is very excited to be teaching at MSA again this summer. Last summer, he was the Opti Green fleet coach, and this summer he looks forward to coaching the Opti Championship team. Kyle sailed extensively at MSA in both Opti's and 420's. He taught Opti Beginner, intermediate and advanced sailing in past years. Kyle attends Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.

Fred Dodge
Adult Sailing
In the past year Fred Dedge earned his Captains License and received his Certificate from the Offshore Sailing School. However, his degrees have nothing to do with how he learned to sail and his experiences sailing. Fred learned to sail on Fishers Island where he was able to go rowing and sailing without any direct supervision. Fed believes the best way to learn to sail is by fooling around and having fun. He hopes to help others learn the love of sailing without any intimidation. His thirty years of teaching Seamanship at the Landmark School gave Fred the love of teaching sailing by the belief, " that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so worth doing, as simply messing about in boats".

Adam Hickey
Adult Sailing
Adam Hickey is joining MSA for the first time this summer. He grew up surrounded by motorboats on the South Shore and fell happily into sailing when he moved to the North Shore. He began crewing J24 class and moved up to skipper when he recognized the increased comfort of driving instead of being thrown around on foredeck. Additionally, Adam taught sailing in the Landmark School Seamanship Program under the leadership of Harry Dudley. Here he practiced and finessed his skills in teaching all levels of sailing to students from fourth grade through twelfth grade. Adam is excited to join the Adult Sailing program this summer.

Cameron Holley
Senior Instructor
Cameron Holley began sailing with MSA at age 8, and progressed to the Opti Race Team and then the 420 Race Team. Cameron sailed on the Manchester Essex High School Varsity Sailing Team from 7th – 12th grade where he was captain for 3 years and earned 3 State Championships. Cameron recently graduated from MERHS and will be attending Tufts University in the Fall where he will also be a member of the sailing team. He is looking forward to his second year as an instructor with MSA.

Antonia Leggett
Senior Instructor
Antonia Leggett is returning to MSA for her second summer as an instructor. She has been with the MSA family for over ten years, with experience racing optimists and 420s. When not on the water as an instructor, Antonia races J boats in the Manchester area. She graduates from Phillips Academy Andover in June and will be attending Georgetown University in the fall, where she will be sailing competitively. She is USCG certified in safe boating and US Sailing Level 1 certified.

Ashley Ryan
Junior Instructor

Ashley Ryan is teaching for her second summer as a full-time MSA Junior Instructor. Before becoming an instructor she raced 420s with MSA for three summers after going through the MSA learn-to-sail program for many years. Ashley loves sailing and enjoys watching kids get increasingly enthusiastic about the sport as their skills improve and their confidence builds. She is also a certified lifeguard so she feels comfortable both on and in the water. Ashley recently graduated from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School and she will be a freshman at Elon University this Fall. In the meantime, Ashley can't wait to be out on the water sharing her favorite sport while having a blast with MSA sailors!

Henry Scharfe

Henry Scharfe is thrilled to be returning to MSA for his second season as a Senior Instructor and his fourth season instructing. In years past, Henry has taught the Beginner Sailing, Opti Intermediate, and Sea Urchin classes, as well as the Adult Beginner course. Katie Shinopoulos

Katie is a rising senior at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School. She has been sailing for eight years and racing for three. She has been a part of MSA for her three years of racing and is excited to start her first year as an instructor. When not sailing she plays field hockey, tennis and skiing.

Gillian Winn
