The MSA has started this summer with some of the best weather seen in recent memory. After a rainy first few weeks last summer, Sailors in Session 1 were treated to beautiful sunny days and great wind! The Mates and Bosuns took full advantage of smaller than normal class sizes and sailed with a lot more one-on-one attention from their instructors. Ensigns enjoyed some great sailing in the 420s and an occasional Rhodes, while the Skippers actually had some spinnakers flying by week 2. Our Mariners and Bosuns II classes were quite small so the kids experienced what amounted to private lessons. The two groups combined for a great day of sailing on John Kiley's boat on July 8. Thanks again, John!
With the start of Session 2, the weather continued it's amazing streak, although the wind has not been quite as consistent. Even with a couple of days of threatening skies, the rain stayed away and the classes have been out on the water every day. Both Bosuns and Mates are full this session so there are suddenly a lot more sails on the water and it looks great! Ensigns and Skippers have also increased and almost every 420 is used each morning. Mariners and Bosuns II have likewise grown in numbers which has made for some competitve sailing in the windier afternoons. Meanwhile, The Sea Urchins class has been growing with each new weekly session and this week's group is 16 sailors strong! Looks like Mates will be full again next summer.
Our Race Teams have been loving the great winds we have seen so far this summer, and their skills have been increasing rapidly. As of this writing, MSA racers are making a very strong showing at Marblehead Junior Race Week. They will certainly be bringing back some awards in every fleet: 420s, Opti Champs and Opti Green. Alex, Theo Kristy and Annalee have been doing a great job coaching the teams and it shows.
With Session 2 ending on Friday, it's hard to believe that the season is half over. We hope you'll join us in hoping for continued good weather and great wind. There are still some spots open in Session 3 and 4, so check out the Registration tab and get in on this before it ends!
