With all the rain during June and the first weeks of July, it's hard to believe that we are already heading into the middle of the summer. Although early in the racing season, the MSA Race Teams have experienced a lot of success at area regattas. MSA news-junkies have already read about our 3rd Annual Green Fleet Regatta, but that was just the beginning.
July 9-10 was the Hingham Bay Junior Regatta and the MSA 420 and Opti Championship fleets made the journey and would not be denied some of the glory up for grabs. Like many regattas during the last couple of years, Hingham offered a Green Fleet for 420s. Aptly coached by Billy McNamara, the Green Team of Jessie Gordon and Chris Hinds came in 4th out of 18 boats, followed closely by the MSA teams of Mimi Leggett and Brady Winn (5th) and Sam Creighton and Marguerite Mullen (7th).On the Championship side, Nate Jermain and Walter Hunnewell listened closely to Coach Alex Arntsen and managed to take 7th place out of 41 boats, edging out fellow MSAers Connor Winn and Erin Snyder, who finished in 9th. Not to be outdone, Jamie Altreuter's Opti Championship team placed nicely, with Miranda Bakos getting 6th in Red Fleet and Cam Holley and James Collins pulling out 5th and 7th respectively in Blue Fleet.
While the Opti Champs were away, the Greenies got to play at the Linda Wieditz Memorial Regatta at Sandy Bay Yacht Club on Friday, July 10. Kristy Landsvik coached her team to the top, with Nicholas Mehlman taking 1st place and Antonia Leggett nabbing 3rd. Courtney Holley, Lucas Martz and Quinlan Byrne rounded out the top 7 in a regatta that saw 26 competitiors from area clubs.
Finally, over the weekend, the Lipton Cup was held at Squantum Yacht Club. Working with zero days rest since Hingham, Nate Jermain and Walter Hunnewell went, saw and conquered the fleet to take 1st place by a landslide. An impressive four days of racing for this team that will also be together for the upcoming Marblehead Race Week, 420 Nationals and Mass Bay Junior Olympics. Will there be more hardware in their future? Stay Tuned!
